Accessories Unchanged Meta held all accessory prices
The April 2026 price rise. Effective 19 April 2026 Meta raised every headset price, blaming component costs: "The global surge in the price of critical components - specifically memory chips - is impacting almost every category of consumer electronics, including VR." Refurbished stock went up too; accessories did not. Prices have held steady for four months since.
The gap is now $250, not $200. Quest 3S launched as the budget option at $299. At $349.99 against $599.99, the case for stretching to Quest 3 is stronger than it was: you get pancake lenses instead of Fresnel, 110° field of view instead of 96°, 25 pixels per degree instead of 20, a hardware depth sensor, continuous IPD adjustment, and 512 GB instead of 128 GB.

Quest 3S is not a cheaper Quest 3. It is Quest 2 optics - Fresnel lenses, the same panel, the same stepped IPD - wrapped around Quest 3 internals: the XR2 Gen 2 chip, 8 GB of memory, and colour passthrough. That is why it runs every Quest 3 game while looking noticeably softer, and why it's 12 mm thicker despite weighing the same.

Horizon OS, release by release

Meta abandoned the v65…v85 numbering in early 2026. What would have been v86 shipped as Horizon OS 2.1, and updates now use conventional major.minor versions. Releases land roughly monthly, a few weeks after the Public Test Channel.

2.7Week of 17 Aug 2026Current

Now rolling out

  • Entered the Public Test Channel the week of 27 July 2026 and began the public rollout the week of 17 August.
  • Meta had not published a consolidated feature summary at the time of writing - check Settings → System → Software Update in your headset for the notes attached to your build.
2.6Late July 2026

Meta AI becomes part of the system

  • "Hey Meta" now works at the OS level rather than inside a single app - it opens apps, searches the store, takes screenshots and answers questions.
  • Available across Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro.
  • A Wi-Fi connectivity regression hit some Quest 2 headsets after this update; Meta issued a fix in late July.
2.4≈ June 2026

Moving and sorting without controllers

  • Hand-gesture locomotion in Horizon Home - make a fist, then tap or swipe with your thumb to move.
  • Custom drag-and-drop app sorting, with folders in the App Library.
  • App crash recovery that restores your window positions.
  • Around the same period: convert any web image to stereoscopic 3D via "View in 3D", and upload phone camera-roll photos for the same treatment.

Goodbye v85 - the first release of Horizon OS 2

  • Windows auto-snap to your walls and rescale as you approach them.
  • Battery and Wi-Fi indicators added to Navigator; Worlds removed from the system bar.
  • Xbox cloud gaming surfaced directly in system search.
  • Light and dark theme switching without a restart.
  • Offline, on-device voice dictation, and per-app photo and video sharing permissions.
Navigator finished rolling out in June 2026 - about thirteen months after testing began in v77. The old Universal Menu is gone, Horizon Feed was removed entirely, and headsets now boot straight to your app grid. Navigator's seven tabs: You, Notifications, People, App Library, Quick Controls, Show/Hide Windows, and Passthrough/VR Home.

The year so far

What actually changed in 2026

A contraction year for Meta's first-party output, and a platform bet placed firmly on third-party developers - who now account for 86% of headset usage time.

January

Reality Labs cuts, three studios closed

Meta laid off more than 10% of Reality Labs staff and shut Sanzaru Games (Asgard's Wrath), Twisted Pixel (Deadpool VR) and Armature Studio (Resident Evil 4 VR). A Harry Potter VR game was cancelled. Reality Labs lost $19.1 billion in 2025.

February

Horizon Workrooms shut down

Discontinued on 16 February 2026, with associated data deleted. Most "best Quest apps" lists still recommend it - it no longer exists.

Feb–June

Horizon Worlds leaves VR - mostly

Worlds was pulled from the Quest Store on 31 March and Meta announced a full VR shutdown, then backtracked two days later after user backlash. Where it landed: Worlds is mobile-first, no longer promoted in headsets, and since 15 June you can no longer build worlds in VR. Legacy Unity-built worlds still run.

April

Every headset got more expensive

From 19 April: Quest 3S 128 GB $299.99 → $349.99, 256 GB $399.99 → $449.99, Quest 3 512 GB $499.99 → $599.99. Meta cited memory chip costs. Sony, Microsoft and Samsung raised prices in the same window.

July

Horizon+ added Xbox cloud gaming

From 27 July, the $7.99/month subscription includes an Xbox Game Pass Starter tier - 50+ titles, up to 10 hours a month, with Touch controller gamepad emulation so you don't need an Xbox pad.

Ongoing

Horizon Engine replaces Unity

Announced at Connect 2025 and shipping since the v81 test channel, Meta's in-house engine claims 4× faster world loading and 100+ concurrent users per instance. It powers Horizon Worlds and Quest's Immersive Home, with TypeScript scripting and PhysX, FMOD and PopcornFX support.

Rumour

Quest 4 - "Griffin"

CTO Andrew Bosworth said in February that two devices are on the roadmap. Leaked memos point to H2 2027 at the earliest; the 2026 candidates were cancelled. Nothing is officially announced.

Rumour

An ultralight, tethered headset

Reports describe a sub-110 g headset with a compute puck on a cable and open peripheral vision, aimed at media, social and fitness rather than gaming. Expected H1 2027, possibly previewed at Connect. Codenames vary wildly between outlets - treat them all as unconfirmed.

Confirmed cancelled

Quest Pro 2 is not coming

The high-end "La Jolla" headset was killed in 2024 - micro-OLED at under $1,000 wasn't achievable in the timeframe. No revival has been reported since.

23–24 Sept

Meta Connect 2026

Confirmed for Menlo Park, scoped to "VR, wearables, metaverse and AI". Zuckerberg teased an unidentified pair of smart glasses in May. Meta says smart glasses passed 7 million units sold in 2025.

Practical

Setup, streaming and fixes

The things people actually search for, in the order they usually need them.

Setting up a new headset

You'll need a Meta account (a Meta Horizon profile), the Meta Horizon app on your phone, a Wi-Fi network, and a charged headset.

  1. Charge the headset fully before you start - the first software update is large.
  2. Power on and install the Meta Horizon app on your phone.
  3. Pair the two using the code shown in the headset.
  4. Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in or create your account.
  5. Let the system update run. This is often the longest step.
  6. Set your IPD, then draw your boundary.
  7. Run the controller tutorial - First Steps, or First Encounters on Quest 3 and 3S.

Get the IPD right before anything else. On Quest 3, squeeze and slide the lenses; there's also a lens-depth adjustment for eye relief. It is the single biggest factor in how sharp the headset looks.

Boundary and play space

Meta button → Quick Controls → Settings → Environment Setup → Boundary

  • Stationary gives you a default 3 ft × 3 ft (1 m × 1 m) circle centred on you - fine for seated and standing-still games.
  • Roomscale lets you draw a custom boundary. Meta recommends at least 6.5 ft × 6.5 ft (2 m × 2 m) of clear floor.

Worth turning on: Glanceable Boundary (look down to see your play space without triggering the full grid) and Double-Tap for Passthrough. You can also adjust boundary sensitivity, floor level and grid colour.

Playing PC VR games

Note the rename: what used to be called Oculus Link is now Meta Horizon Link. Four routes, all viable:

  • Horizon Link (wired) - free. Needs a USB-C port. The official 5 m cable is about $79.99, but a good USB 3.0 cable works.
  • Air Link (wireless) - free and built in.
  • Steam Link - free, from the Horizon Store, straight into SteamVR.
  • Virtual Desktop - $19.99 once. AV1 support and bitrates up to 400 Mbps; the enthusiast choice.
PC requirements

Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 and up, 16 GB+ RAM, Windows 10 or newer, and a USB-C port for wired use. Supported GPUs run from the GTX 970 and GTX 1060 6 GB desktop cards through the RTX 20/30/40/50 series, and AMD 400-series through 9000-series plus Vega. Not supported: GTX 1060 3 GB or mobile, GTX 1650, AMD 200/300 series, Intel Arc, and workstation cards.

Wireless network setup

Put the PC on Ethernet, not Wi-Fi. Use a Wi-Fi 5, 6 or 6E router, keep the headset on the 5 GHz band, and put the router in the same room with line of sight, a metre or so off the floor. Avoid mesh networks - the extra hop adds latency you will feel.

Casting to a TV or phone
  • Chromecast-enabled TV - open the universal menu, pick the camera icon, choose your TV.
  • Any TV with a browser - go to oculus.com/casting, sign in, and cast to "computer".
  • Fire TV Stick - install the free AirScreen app. Expect about a second of audio delay; pair Bluetooth headphones to the headset instead.
  • Phone - Meta Horizon app → headset icon → Cast. Mirror your phone to a TV from there if you want it on the big screen.
  • Laptop + HDMI - cast to oculus.com/casting in a browser and run HDMI to the TV.
Comfort and motion sickness

Nausea in VR is almost always the mismatch between what your eyes see and what your inner ear feels. It fades with exposure if you build up gradually rather than pushing through.

  • Start with short sessions - 15 to 20 minutes - and stop at the first hint of queasiness rather than powering on.
  • Use teleport movement and snap turning before smooth locomotion, and turn on the comfort vignette.
  • Begin with stationary games. Beat Saber, Walkabout Mini Golf and mixed-reality apps rarely trouble anyone.
  • Keep the highest stable refresh rate - dropped frames make it worse.
  • Fit matters: correct IPD, level on your face, snug. A top strap or Elite Strap shifts weight off your cheekbones.
  • Point a fan at yourself. Airflow genuinely helps, and it stops the lenses fogging.
Fixing drift, tracking and battery problems
Controller drift
  1. Update firmware - Settings → System → Software Updates.
  2. Recalibrate - Settings → Devices → Controller Calibration.
  3. Unpair and re-pair - Settings → Devices → Controllers.
  4. Replace the batteries.
  5. Factory reset, only as a last resort.
Tracking loss

Light the room well but avoid direct sunlight and glare, cover or move mirrors and large reflective surfaces, keep controllers in view, and clean the sensors - three pill-shaped ones on the front, two circles under the bottom edge - with a microfibre cloth.

Short battery life

Drop from 120 Hz to 90 Hz, lower the brightness, turn on Battery Saver, and let the headset cool between sessions.

Factory reset - three ways
  • Phone app: Meta Horizon → menu → Devices → Headset settings → Advanced settings → Factory reset.
  • Hardware: power off, then hold Power + Volume Down for two seconds. Navigate with the volume buttons, confirm with power. Works with no phone and no Wi-Fi.
  • Web: meta.com → Meta Horizon Profile Settings → Devices → Factory reset, confirmed by a six-digit email code.

A reset erases local data and settings only. Your purchased games stay in your account. Local photos, videos and recordings are permanently deleted - back them up first.

Parents, teens and supervision

The minimum age to use a Quest headset is 10.

  • 10–12 - a parent-managed preteen account. Parent approval is required for everything.
  • 13–17 - the teen manages their own account. Supervision is on by default, but the teen can switch it off.
  • 18+ - full autonomy.

With supervision on, a parent can approve or deny each app download, purchase or use; require approval for all purchases including Meta Credits; set daily time limits that vary by day; schedule enforced breaks; curate an approved contact list for chat and calls; manage privacy and data-sharing; and see the full app inventory.

Set it up in the Meta Horizon app or at the Family Center site. Verifying you're the parent requires a payment method - a nominal amount is charged and refunded.
